This book doesn't have anything to do with celiac disease but the information regarding vegetarianism is startling. It is the book of the most comprehensive study of diet and it's link to disease ever done, a 20 year Govt. backed study connected with Cornell University and I think everyone should read it. It's written well, not boring and dry, and the information is nothing short of amazing in terms of animal protein and it's link to cancer and of course heart disease. My sister is in 4th stage breast cancer and that's how it crossed my path. I can't urge others to read this book enough. The introduction is written by John Robbins and evidently every nutritionist regards the author, Colin Campbell, as THE nutritionist guru of all time. This book could seriously save lives. Anyone suffering from cancer needs to read it especially. He proves that animal based protein (including casein- sorry! I don't want to give it up either!!!) doesn't cause cancer itself but is the trigger that instigates the carcinogens we are exposed to to cause it. The author evidently grew up on a meat and dairy farm and was originally working to find more efficient ways of raising cattle and kept coming across information he eventually couldn't deny and was the impetus for this study, the book being the compilation of these studies. http://www.amazon.com/China-Study-Co...9322632&sr=8-1 |

The book is an excellent one and demonstrates the link between amount of animal protein and prevalence of any number of diseases of abundance. I wouldn't say that everyone accepts him as the nutritional guru of all time, however. I've certainly seen any number of times he's been dismissed in the media as some crazy animal rights person from PCRM. No, this isn't accurate, and no, I haven't seen anyone really come up with any good arguments against the conclusions of the China Study. (There used to be a debate online between Campbell & the Paleo diet guy, but unfortunately the link doesn't seem to work anymore.) Folks may also be interested in reading McDougall (a lot for free on his website and his newsletters, in addition to his books), Ornish, Barnard, Esselstyn & Saunders. They all pretty much end up at the same point as regards disease and diet (although Ornish allows a little animal protein, unfortunately -- I've never seen the justification for that other than his view of patient acceptance). Everyone might be interested in perusing the lectures here: http://www.vsh.org/videos.htm Or here: http://www.vegsource.com/video/video_menu.htm You have Campbell, McDougall, etc. I've slowly been plowing my way through. |

I also have this book and it's great! I really appreciate the large chapter on auto-immune diseases and how they can be managed much better by a vegetarian/vegan diet. Not to mention the book has so much great information. Definetly recommend this one!
