Pinch off most of those blossoms, let the plant devote all it's energy to growing new leaves. You don't want them to go to seed yet.
Also, the more you use your herbs, the faster and bushier they will grow. For leafy herbs like mint or basil just make sure you leave the first two sets of true leaves on each stem when you pinch off the new leaves. For woody stemmed herbs like rosemary you can cut back longer stems instead of just pinching off the tips.

In preparation for hurricane Gustav, I cut back most of my herbs and made a ton of pestos!
I made one with all different basils, pine nuts, garlic, Parmesan, evoo and lemon. One is a mixed herb pesto of parsley, rosemary, marjoram, oregano, basil, and chives with garlic, walnuts and walnut oil. The last one is an Asian style pesto with lots of mint, Thai basil, garlic, ginger, lemongrass, rice wine vinegar, siracha and sesame oil. We got a lot of wind and rain, but no flooding. I needed to cut the herbs back anyway, my mint was about three feet high and the cinnamon basil was over four feet high! Wish I would have taken pictures first.

To keep caterpillars away, you need to keep the butterflies that laid them away. I like using colourful spin wheels like the ones you get at the show or if things are really special you can net them with a really fine mesh.
You can also plant marigolds or some other pretty yellow flowers somewhere else in the garden and the butterfly will visit there and not your basil. If you have already got caterpillars go searching for them put them in a jar and move them somewhere else in the garden as far away from you edibles as possible. |
