Default My herb garden!

Here are some pics (I finally figured out how to post them) of my herbs. This garden is doing great, the rabbits and vols leave the herbs alone.

Since I don't use any pesticides, there are a few little leaf chewers, but that does not bother me. I rather a few critters over poison any day.

Apple mint, Lemon Basil, French Lavender, Genovese Basil and Mexican Tarragon........

Rosemary.....

Pineapple Mint.....

Greek Oregano...

Cinnamon Basil...

Red Rubin Basil...

Chocolate mint (really smells just like a Peppermint Patty!)

Lemon thyme....

This was my lettuce and edible flower garden, it is closest to the woods behind our house and also the favorite of the rabbits and vols.

Looks great! My basal is doing better -those darn beetles finally left. I didn't realize that the herbs grew blossoms though...new to all of this. My oregano has blossoms now and the basal keeps popping ones too. Sorry about the lettuce. I'm sure the bunnies enjoyed it.

Pinch off most of those blossoms, let the plant devote all it's energy to growing new leaves. You don't want them to go to seed yet.

Also, the more you use your herbs, the faster and bushier they will grow.

For leafy herbs like mint or basil just make sure you leave the first two sets of true leaves on each stem when you pinch off the new leaves. For woody stemmed herbs like rosemary you can cut back longer stems instead of just pinching off the tips.

In preparation for hurricane Gustav, I cut back most of my herbs and made a ton of pestos!

I made one with all different basils, pine nuts, garlic, Parmesan, evoo and lemon. One is a mixed herb pesto of parsley, rosemary, marjoram, oregano, basil, and chives with garlic, walnuts and walnut oil. The last one is an Asian style pesto with lots of mint, Thai basil, garlic, ginger, lemongrass, rice wine vinegar, siracha and sesame oil.

We got a lot of wind and rain, but no flooding. I needed to cut the herbs back anyway, my mint was about three feet high and the cinnamon basil was over four feet high!

Wish I would have taken pictures first.

I really let my herbs go without care for some time. My basil got eaten, I have so much parsely tho and my kale is still growing.

Any tips on what to plant to keep caterpillars away from basil? They were fluro green ones.

To keep caterpillars away, you need to keep the butterflies that laid them away. I like using colourful spin wheels like the ones you get at the show or if things are really special you can net them with a really fine mesh.
You can also plant marigolds or some other pretty yellow flowers somewhere else in the garden and the butterfly will visit there and not your basil.
If you have already got caterpillars go searching for them put them in a jar and move them somewhere else in the garden as far away from you edibles as possible.

Cool

Wow, that's awesome. I hope to have a huge garden this spring. We've started to clear an area, I'll just have to fence it off from the dogs.
