These burgers are very good. Wish I could come up with a more appetizing name. If you have any suggestions, let me know!
True-Grit Burgers
1 ½ C chopped onions
2 T olive oil
5 C water
½ C soy sauce
1 ½ t garlic powder
1 ½ T onion powder
2 T milled flax seed
1 ½ t basil
1 T Liquid Smoke
1 t oregano
1/3 C yeast flakes
½ C sunflower seeds, chopped walnuts or peanuts
1 1/3 C quick grits
In a large pot sauté onions in olive oil until soft. Add remaining ingredients except oats. Stir together and boil 5 minutes. Add quick grits and cook for 5 minutes (or what ever the package says). Mixture will be very thick. Let cool and pack into oiled tin containers to mould. Let cool in refrigerator and then cut into ¾” – 1” slices. Bake at 350 degrees for 35 minutes on an oiled cooking sheet and then turn over and bake for an additional 15 minutes.
NOTE: these must be cold before slicing or they won’t be firm enough to slice and bake.
