As a new-ish gf vegan, I'm taking my first plane trip since starting my new diet. Have taken many road trips where it's easy to pack food or find a grocery store nearby. Any tips/advice on good travelling food that packs well and won't explode in my suitcase?! Want to have some things on hand in my hotel room just in case. Thanks!! |

I'd definitely recommend Larabars! They're fantastic, pretty healthy, gluten free, and vegan. If you haven't tried these I'd recommend picking some up. I've been doing quite a bit of traveling myself lately (across Europe), and to avoid any problems in finding suitable food I've packed plenty of Larabars, nuts, seeds, and fruit that travels well, like apples and oranges.

Depending on where you are you could ask some food companies for sample packs. I just went away for a weekend and took some sealed sample packs of bread with me- I had the easiest breakfast ever! Other than that, I'd follow Katrina's advice with seeds and nuts, although I always struggle with fruit (I end up with mush all over my phone, purse, hairbrush etc!) Sorry, I don't know what Larabars are! I also phoned ahead to my hotel and explained my situation, fore-warned is fore-armed! They provided me with anything I may need and told me exactly what I could expect from the area! Now thats service! Thats, really all I can say, except have a great trip! |

Larabars are the single greatest invention for Celiacs and vegans!!! They are a mixture of fruit and nuts and come in a wide variety of flavors. I'd definitely recommend checking them out. I know that the company is pretty good about giving away sample packs to introduce you to the product, so you could definitely contact them (@larabar on twitter) and see if they'll send some your way. If not, health food stores, and even a lot of traditional grocery stores, carry them. Whole Foods definitely does. They're gluten free, vegan, raw and 100% delicious. larabar.com As for the fruit, try slicing up some apples and/or pears and mixing in a little bit of lemon juice. That's always worked well for me when I travel! |

If you get yourself a food dehydrator (the Excalibur ones are awesome!) you could make your own dried fruit and bar snacks to carry with you. That's a bummer about the Lara Bars though....they're yummy and so convenient for us vegan celiac folks. You might look for other types of raw food bars though. I've found that those are *usually* safe; just a bit pricier. |
