It turns out that family members within the last day are letting me know they can't make it anyway this year. So I can pretty much make whatever I want, find a restaurant, whatever. Each year the local vegetarian society has a fantastic spread for Thanksgiving. I've never been able to make it before. With luck they will do it again this year. I just found the announcement for last year ... reading the menu is making me drool.

Thought I'd share more about me in here... I am 24, I have been a vegetarian since 1999, my decision to stop eating meat etc was based on not wanting to consume my friends.... I am a Veterinary Nurse & I just couldnt work and eat my mates!! I have been a Coeliac since October 2006. I have a meat & gluten eating husband, I am not going to ram my opinions down this throat, its my choice not to eat meat. It's too expensive for him to eat gluten free, so I cook 2 seperate meals every night, but most meals are easily adapted to suit! People always look at me like I am wizz in the kitchen when I tell them I cook 2 seperate meals, but it isnt that bad!! Christmas time is always interesting, I have never been given vegetarian food, I've always been made to eat salad.... Last year I made a vegetarian paella & basil pesto pasta (I did some GF & some normal) hardly anyone ate it!!! I was heartbroken, my husband ate it & so did my Mum! We alternate Christmas Lunch between our 2 families, luckily, this year, we have lunch with my in laws and they have a caterer come in and cook for us, so they will have something lined up for me, that I can eat!! |

| Oops, now Jage doesn't want the recipe. I'm sure I will come up with something else to post, however. lilacgirl, too bad that your family mostly wouldn't try what you made. They sound great. Vegetarian paella happens to be the dish I make when folks come to dinner. (Talk about being a one-trick pony). I don't make an alternative. No one has ever complained. Of course, I start out with sherry and Spanish almonds, then serve my favorite rioja with dinner, and have a Spanish liquor with dessert |

My aunty treats me like I'm an idiot, she wouldnt even buy GF chips or anything!!! She has NO idea, she is so ignorant & its not just me, she just doesnt like people who are DIFFERENT! She talks to people from other countries SLOWLY & LOUDLY, because she thinks they cant understand her! So my Aunty & Uncle (cos he's whipped) wont eat anything thats not the usual!! |

Yeah, foods seems to bring out something primal sometime in folks. Eat something different? That's bad enough, but eat it at Thanksgiving? Unthinkable. (I don't subscribe to this; just reporting ...) It is funny that I grew up eating very bland and unimaginative food. Now I realize my mom was a bad cook I mean we rarely had fresh veggies (some I never had until I was an adult), not even onions (dehydrated onion flakes ... I kid you not), nothing was seasoned other than with salt, etc. But now that my dad died, my mom is willing to try all these new types of food. It turns out her cooking followed his preferences. And his preferences, I now find out, is because he grew up with a father than had all these wierd ideas about nutrition and forced peculiar & unusual concoctions on his sons. So my dad wanted nothing unusual or different or seasoned. I don't think he even ever had Chinese food in his life. He only discovered he actually LIKED pizza when he was in his 60s. (Then he tried to make up for lost time and wanted it all the time.) So you don't always know where people are coming from.

Hi, I'm Susana; I am 61 yrs. old, started with Macrobiotics 25 years ago, became a macrobiotic vegan 10 years ago, and gluten-free 5 years ago. Being a Macrobiotic gluten-free vegan was too much to handle since I am also sensitive to soy. So, now I am a whole foods gluten-free vegan, following the Natural Hygiene approach. It seems to be working ok for now. I will eat corn tortillas and gluten-free pasta (Tinkyada is my favorite), but other that, I avoid flour products. I have been carting food with me for 25 years. It never gets any easier. I still have anxiety whenever I have to eat socially. I really enjoyed the comments about being celiac. Have a great day!

I'm 37 y.o., living in Sacramento CA and work as a freelance health news producer for tv. Funny how I've been doing this for 14 years and had never heard of celiac disease. Diagnosed five weeks ago after blood tests and biopsies, vegetarian for six weeks. (just happened to go veggie just before diagnosis -- so this has been interesting) but I love being a vegetarian and at this point in time I just can't imagine going back. My husband eats meat and gluten but we both prepare our own meals, kindof like college roommates sharing the refrigerator. It works, for the moment. He's an Ironman triathlete so he's pretty used to providing for his own needs anyway, since his diet mostly consists of Gatorade. Hmmm I wonder if Gatorade is safe for celiacs...
