Default Shoes

So my hubby and I were having a discussion about shoes today. I was looking at Birks trying to find some that were made without leather. They have a couple that are made with synthetics. So which ones are worse. Personally if I'm not eating meat because it is wrong to kill animals wouldn't wearing them be the same? In his opionion wearing synthestics that don't break down are much worse for the Earth. I'm just trying to find some good walking shoes and not feel bad about it. Any thoughts??

If you're buying real Birks, i don't think it matters. Birks last forever, and it's easy to just throw a new sole on them. I'm guessing that the synth upper will last longer than the leather upper so you'll get a lot of years out of the pair--by the time they're un-repairable, they're probably about ready to disintegrate into a pile of man-made dust.

(Sorry, sick and loopy feeling, so not sure if that was a logical jump)

From an environmental standpoint I'm not sure your hubby can make a case for leather being better. It still takes more natural resources to feed the cow, slaughter it, tan the leather (horrible environmentally), ship, etc.

BTW, I've had my vegan birks 10+ years and they are holding up well.

I've wondered about this same thing. I wouldn't be surprised if they were about equally bad for the planet. It's kind of a lose-lose situation the way I see it. Flip a coin!

just my two cents, but if there's anything i can't wear anymore (besides underoos and socks) i donate them. even if they're crappy they might be gold to someone else...then you won't be the one to have to throw them out

Hello,

EARTH make some good vegan shoes that are certified by The Vegan Society - and they are having a sale at the moment!

I am in the UK, I get mine from My Vegan Shoes - Vegan, Vegetarian and Kosher Footwear or Love Those Shoes - if you are elsewhere enter "Earth Vegan shoes" into your search engine to find an outlet local to you.

I just ran a quick search on the US website Zappos.com (by entering VEGAN in their search box) - they have 370 vegan shoe styles from many different makers for sale at the moment.

You also have Vegan Shoes NYC & Online - Mooshoes.com in the US - their whole stock is animal friendly.
