Founded in 1934 by Mormon brothers Nephi and Golden Grigg, the company got its start by growing and selling sweet corn in the western United States. In 1949 with the help of their brother-in-law, the Grigg brothers bought a potato processing plant.

The potato plant was located in Idaho, quite close to the Oregon border. Thus, the Ore Ida name was conceived after taking the first few letters of each state and combining them. Much interest was given to the company after opening a second processing plant.

The Ore Ida company went public in 1961. By 1965 it was purchased wholly from the H. J. Heinz Company. Today, Ore Ida is still owned and operated by Heinz. At the height of the brand’s popularity it employed over 1,000 local residents, with over 650 still working there today.
