Gluten Free Cookie Mixes

Cookies are the ultimate dessert food that everyone deserves to enjoy. Are there options for gluten-free cookie mixes?

Gluten-free cookie mixes come in various flavors, just like traditional cookie mixes. Different brands may use their own blend of ingredients and alternatives like rice or oat flour. Many mixes incorporate gluten-free all-purpose flour and almond flour to achieve a good cookie texture.

I’m glad cookies are still on the menu. In this article, we’ll explore the best gluten-free cookie mixes, what you can do with the mixes, and a homemade gluten-free cookie option.

Additional Uses for Gluten-free Cookie Mixes

Cookie mixes can be used for other baking activities besides chocolate chip cookies. You can use store-bought mixes as “cookie bread” or make your own mix to give to a friend!

Cookie Loaves

I don’t know if anyone has ever told you this, but you don’t have to make cookies with cookie mix. If you’re alright with a denser texture and different cooking times, you can make a “cookie loaf,” similar to how you might make banana bread.

My favorite way to do this is to make a “kitchen sink” cookie loaf, meaning I take any gluten-free ingredients I have on hand and toss them in! Gluten-free pretzels, m&ms, peanuts, or caramel drops are only a few options. I like to bake mine in cast iron with high sides to ensure the loaves are cooked through.

Cooke Mix in a Jar

Making a gluten-free cookie mix for your friends can be an excellent gift for holidays, birthdays, and special occasions. This way, your friends can make gluten-free cookies however they want, with or without eggs and dairy.

You can use any container you want, but I recommend mason jars. These help keep the mixes fresher and look great when wrapped with twine or ribbon. You can attach baking directions and labels directly to the jar using gift tags or homemade stickers.

You can use the following recipe as the cookie mix or search for your favorite gluten-free mixes online. The ingredients are often layered in the jar for a more aesthetically pleasing appearance, but I prefer to dry mix the ingredients so my friends can use as much or as little at a time.

Homemade Gluten-free Cookie Tips

If you’re not worried about dairy, there are a few ways to ensure your gluten-free cookies are as delicious as the traditional type. Browning your butter is an excellent way to add flavor depth to your cookie recipe. The resulting flavor is similar to a rich caramel.

Adding a tablespoon of milk to the butter helps account for the liquid that evaporated during the browning process. Gluten-free flour needs extra liquid to prevent chalky cookies.

Use high-quality flour like King Arthur Measure-for-Measure flour or Bob’s Red Mill gluten-free 1:1 baking flour. Adding almond flour helps the cookies turn GBD (golden, brown, and delicious!). Brown sugar makes the cookies chewier, while vanilla extract helps to balance the sweetness.

Like other baked goods, you’ll need to allow the dough to rest. This way, the gluten-free flour can hydrate and create a softer, chewier cookie. The dough only needs to rest for about 30 minutes at room temperature.

Whisk the gluten-free flour, almond flour, salt, and baking soda until combined in a medium bowl. Then, begin to melt the butter in a saucepan on medium heat. You’ll need to constantly whisk it as it begins to melt. Once the butter solids turn brown, turn off the heat and pour into a heat-resistant bowl.

Add milk, white sugar, and brown sugar to the butter while whisking. Then add the vanilla and egg and whisk until creamy and smooth. Here you can stir in chocolate chips, walnuts, m&ms, or dried fruit. Cover the bowl and let it rest for thirty minutes while the oven preheats to 350 F.

When ready, place two tablespoons of dough a couple of inches apart on baking sheets. Bake for 10-12 minutes.

Here are the ingredients:

  • 1 stick butter
  • 1 Tbsp milk
  • 3/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup white sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 2 tsp vanilla
  • 1 1/3 cups gluten-free flour of your choice
  • 1/4 cup almond flour
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 cup chocolate chips or another ingredient

Summary

Cookies are for everyone, and gluten shouldn’t stand in your way of a delicious dessert. There are various ways to ensure your cookies stay gluten-free, such as baking with gluten-free all-purpose flour or substituting with almond flour. At the end of the day, add whatever your heart desires and enjoy a wonderful treat.
