New York’s Clamato Corporation invented “clam and tomato juice” in 1935.

Harry Hackney trademarked “Clamato” in 1940 after years of attempting. Hackney’s carried Clamato juice in Atlantic City. McCormick ; Company, Inc. trademarked Clamato in 1957. Keurig Dr. Pepper owns the trademark.

Francis Luskey, a scientist with Duffy-Mott in Hamlin, New York, and another colleague in California created the Manhattan clam chowder cocktail in 1966. Thus, Clamato was born.

A recipe for a similar cocktail dates back at least 10 years. The crew trademarked “Mott’s Clamato” for the new cocktail.

Cadbury-Schweppes purchased Mott’s in 1982. Since 2008, Keurig Dr. Pepper has owned Cadbury-Schweppes.

In recent years, a clam has been removed from Clamato’s label to disassociate it from its seafood roots.

Still, the drink has deeper origins than that; a recipe for something quite similar can be found in a cookbook dating back at least ten years. For the new drink, the crew came up with the moniker “Mott’s Clamato,” which they filed as a trademark.

Cadbury-Schweppes acquired the Mott’s brand after acquiring it in 1982. It was spun off from Cadbury-Schweppes in 2008 and is currently owned by Keurig Dr. Pepper.

In recent years, a clam has been removed from the Clamato label as part of the company’s attempt to dissociate the drink from its seafood roots.
