What is Kentucky Fried Chicken?
In 1930 at a roadside Shell gas station just outside of Louisville, Kentucky, the first fried chicken was sold by Colonel Harland Sanders. Given the name as an honorific, not military association, Colonel Sanders amassed great success with his roadside chicken. So much so that he opened his first Kentucky Fried Chicken just six years later.
In 1964 Sanders sold the company to a few investors with the mandate that he continued to serve as the spokesperson and quality controller. He remained in this position up to a month before his death in 1980 at the age of 90.
